February 2002:  Cox Building

Architect Cass Gilbert designed five buildings on the campus of my alma mater, Oberlin College.  The first was Finney Chapel in 1908.  The second was this one, the Cox Administration Building just south of Finney, in 1915.

Cox continued Gilbert's Mediterranean Romanesque style for the Oberlin designs, with its round arches and tile roof.  The landscaping adds much to its beauty.

I took this picture on May 27, 2001.  On the left is a part of Peters Hall.

In 1969 these buildings were the scene of the events described in "Carr Confronted at Cox," elsewhere on this website.

Two years later, there was a new president of the college, Robert Fuller.  He remarked in 1971 that "the small amount of power in the administration is symbolized well by the size of the Administration Building.  It is the smallest building on campus."  (Reference:  Oberlin Architecture, Geoffrey Blodgett.)
