Behind our house, the land fell away rapidly.  The wooded hillside mentioned in the newspaper article continues all the way down to the valley, some 170 feet lower, where Interstate 77 would later be constructed.

I recall only one wild visitor from this “back yard”:  a flying squirrel that got into my father's basement workshop and had to be chased out.

In this 1950 rear view of the house, if I remember correctly, the kitchen is on the left corner of the first floor.  We can see a window facing us.  But another window over the kitchen sink (next page) is out of sight around the corner.
