Here
the audience in the "orchestra" section doesn't have to
shuffle their feet, because all 202 seats are mounted on a motorized
turntable. In the diagram below, I've shown half of it in two
different positions.
When
the turntable is in the position shown in blue, its seats face the
smaller stage outlined in blue in the middle of the room, and we have
a sort of theatre in the round.
When
the turntable rotates 180° to the position shown in purple, its
seats face the main stage outlined in purple. For good measure,
that main stage also rotates to facilitate scene changes.

As
I have since learned, these are also elements in the Walter Gropius
"Total Theatre" project of 1926-27. Click the

In
my version, the floor of the audience turntable slopes down from
level e+
to level a,
with each row half a step lower than the one behind it. The
stationary floor that surrounds the turntable is stepped in one
direction on the left side of the house and the other direction on
the right side. Therefore, audience members must always exit to
their left, no matter in which position their turntable is parked. |
